All-wheel drive, front-wheel drive or rear. So which one is better to choose?

1 Jan

My neighbour asked me one day – “Why companies as Mercedes, BMW, Jaguar, Porsche released until now the car with rear wheel drive”. And really, why? First, Mercedes produce also with front-wheel drive, such as minicar “Class A”, as it should be the size of a compact car of a golf class and less.

We have done some research and found out some details.

Firstly, let us remind you Wheel drive options.

Driving a vehicle determines whether the wheel is transmitted thrust of its engine. All modern cars have four wheels – two front and two rear, while the engine power can be transmitted from the vehicle or to all four wheels, or one pair of wheels – front or back. What is the difference between front, rear and four-wheel drive?

Front-wheel drive – this is when the thrust of the engine is transmitted only to the front pair of wheels. The front wheel, clinging to the road and pull over an entire car, with the rear wheels roll freely behind.

Front-wheel drive is much easier to control, front-wheel drive cars hardly enters, so as the first car is best to choose a car with front wheel drive. On the other hand, cars rear-wheel skid can be easily avoided. You just need to throttle intuitively – let the gas and the car will return to the path. If the front drive car enters, it means that the driver passes all margins.

Rear-wheel drive – it is when the engine power is transmitted to the rear wheels. They rotate, cling to the ground, and how to push the car forward.

  • To call a skid on the front-drive cars is more difficult than in the back. You need to have  great skills to get out of a skid on the front need drive. On the rear wheel drive, drift  is the norm, and it occurs continuously, just let the gas pedal to eliminate it. In other words, rear-wheel drive immediately shows the driver all the danger of slippery roads, and the front hide it from the driver to the last

  • All-wheel drive – it is when the torque from the engine is transmitted to both axles of a vehicle that is simultaneously on all four wheels.

As for the all-wheel drive, it has much difficulties. Four-wheel drive on slippery surfaces can behave as a front or rear, depending on what wheel is slipping.

Four-wheel drive only increases throughput and improves driving dynamics, but don’t improve manageability.

If we talk only about the technical side, you will get bored and never finish reading this “fascinating” and useful article. In general, we have made the following conclusions: for cars with a sporty character is better suited design with rear-wheel drive, such as Porsche, BMW (read Why many motorists choose BMW) Jaguar. The same can be said about the increased comfort and in this case the rear-wheel drive is preferable to MercedesYou give up things when you drive Mercedes Rolls-Royce, Bentley. In this and in another example, more expensive production is justified, but there are no minuses in the comfort of front-wheel cars. Front-wheel drive is great for mass production of inexpensive cars.

If we simplify, it can be concluded as follows: the best one is all-wheel drive, which works in tandem with a system of exchange rate stability. However, cars with all-wheel drive are expensive, also expensive to maintain, and consume a lot of fuel (The Quality of Gas Really Matter). If you need something a little more economical, the best option is a front-wheel drive, which has the perfect combination of characteristics. If you want to get pleasure from driving – choose rear-wheel drive.

That’s all about the drive. And what to choose – it’s up to you, dear colleagues,it is based on the needs and sober assessment of your driving skills. After all, the “bad” and “good” drive, in terms of stability and control, do not happen!
