Audi A3 Sportback g-tron: more gas, less gasoline

15 Mar

The Volkswagen Group is renewing its range of vehicles powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). A little over a month ago we saw the SEAT Leon TGI and now it’s the turn of another compact. The Audi A3 Sportback g-tron 2019 is already available, the model moved by this alternative fuel. It benefits from the Eco label of the DGT and will be an interesting option for many users due to its low cost per kilometer.

Unlike the previous A3 Sportback g-tron, which mounted the 1.4 TFSI, now the new 1.5 TFSI 131 HP is used. It is a mechanical four-cylinder that has been properly adapted for operation with CNG with modifications in the cylinder head, the injection or the catalytic converter of turbochargers. It is linked to the S-tronic seven-speed automatic transmission and it is estimated that its CO2 emissions will be 25% lower than in the gasoline version.

Another of the main novelties of this new Audi A3 Sportback g-tron is the incorporation of a third CNG tank of 4 kg. It adds to the other two already existing, which are under the floor of the trunk and have 7 kg of approximate capacity each. Thanks to this, it increases the autonomy when moving with gas up to 400 kilometers, according to the WLTP cycle. To carry out this increase, its gas tank, which previously had capacity for 50 liters, is reduced to 9 liters.

Audi A3 Sportback g-tron goes without saying that CNG tanks are capable of withstanding pressures of up to 200 bars thanks to a new design and the use of materials such as fiberglass reinforced polymer (GFRP). In Germany you can already reserve and has a starting price of 30,600 euros. Its arrival in every country of Europe will take place shortly and its price is expected to be slightly higher.
