FIAT 500 2016: “good”, but not “excellent”

3 Sep

The 2016 Fiat 500 Coupe and its convertible double, 500c, surprised many skeptics. This duet proved that an economical color car can be not only funny and bright, but also able to win the hearts and minds of motorists who are accustomed to more transport. Although not as big as the Mini Cooper Hardtop or Ford Fiesta, the 500 compensates for the lack of space in the rear seats with its playful design, a long list of equipment and a rich model range, which includes the dynamic Abarth and electric car 500e. Nevertheless, it is good that the careful design of the exterior and interior of the 500 does not directly affect the price, which should have been quite high. However, there is a desire to ask other automakers why their pricing policy cannot be similar.

With respect to such important features as resale value and reliability, the 2016 Fiat 500 is not yet able to surpass the more reputable Honda Fit and Mini Cooper. Compared to these cars, which have large frames, the 500 saloon may seem cramped and uncomfortable.

New in 2016

By 2016, the 500th launched the new Easy package, which is better equipped and more modern than the base Pop, while keeping a low starting price. The 500 is now equipped with the new UConnect 5.0 system with a 5-inch touch screen, Bluetooth and integrated voice commands.

The 2016 Fiat 500 mini-car is quite light on the go, so it starts off perfectly, having only 101 hp. under its tiny hood. It is worth confessing that the power of acceleration and overtaking is not impressive, but the car maneuvers quite well in urban traffic. The quality of management 500, similar to the management of a card, allows you to break through congested traffic. And the length of this car, which is only 355.6 cm, allows you to park in the most unexpected places. The 500 steering system is precise, with fairly good power steering, which improves the overall driving experience. Although the car uses a 5-speed manual transmission – most 500 cars will leave showrooms with a 6-speed automatic transmission from Fiat. By choosing the 160-horsepower Abarth, you get more dynamics, better handling characteristics and more respect on the road from the “bad guys”. Are you one of those who save the planet and not conquer it? The electronic 500e can travel up to 140 km without harmful emissions.

Eco Mode

As if in the modern world there is little attention to high technologies … Fiat 500 allows its owners to download any data – from routing information to CO2 emissions. Data can be stored on a flash drive from which drivers can analyze it, hoping to improve operational efficiency.

Details about the Fiat 500

The compact Fiat 500 2016, in fact, is more spacious in front than you can expect, but at the rear it is as cramped as it seems. The style of the interior is consistent with the promise of being unusual and fashionable. We found that the materials, build quality, and seat comfort are good enough, as for a car with such an affordable price. The only sports car in the group, the Fiat 500 Abarth, features actively supporting front seats, exclusive red stitching, a coarse-rim steering wheel with a flat bottom edge.

The 2016 compact Fiat 500 is a modern interpretation of the tiny 1957 model in which the engine was mounted at the rear. Even though it is larger than the original model, it still lacks 17.8 cm to the size of a modern Mini Cooper. The famous gently sloping rear of the car reflects the individuality of the 500, although it significantly reduces head space in the rear seats. The Fiat 500 is available in an elongated 4-door version that smooths out most of the drawbacks of the coupe. The hatchback offers the following trim levels: Pop, Easy, Sport, Lounge, 1957 and Turbo. At the same time, the 500c soft top is available in the following versions: Pop, Easy and Lounge. The Turbo, Abarth and Electric 500e versions have their own packages. All versions of the car differ in wheels, instrument cluster and bodywork.

Basic equipment

The 2016 Fiat 500 and 500c Pop cars include: a leather steering wheel, 15-inch coated steel wheels, 5-speed manual transmission, air conditioning, cruise control, automatic door closing, power windows and mirrors, Bluetooth, an audio system with 6- speakers, USB port and portable music players. The leader of the Abarth lineup is equipped with an Alpine audio system with a capacity of 276 watts, 16-inch alloy wheels, a suspension specially tuned for sports riding and a dashboard trimmed with leather. Standard car safety features include: 7 airbags, a lift start assistance system that helps prevent the car from rolling back on steep slopes, and probably all the other advanced technologies you can find in new cars at the same price, or even higher. Optional equipment

The fully equipped 2016 Fiat 500 Lounge operates a 6-speed automatic transmission, leather seats, heated front seats, reverse parking sensors and automatic climate control. The Fiat 500 in the Sport version features a suspension with settings for sports driving, 16-inch wheels and a variety of aesthetic solutions, including brake calipers and an elegant rear spoiler. The Turbo model has added large front brakes and more reliable suspension settings, in accordance with the specific 16-inch wheels and features. The powerful Abarth offers large 17-inch wheels, 2-tone leather upholstery and, optionally, white or red ribbons that extend along the sides of the body.

Under the hood

The 2016 Fiat 500 front-wheel drive revives the small but efficient 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, which uses Fiat’s patented MultiAir technology. This development changes the timing of the intake valve and its raising. Fiat sets up the engine in 3 power levels: the basic version 500 is equipped with an engine with a power of 101k.s. (of course with supercharging); Turbo – demonstrates 135 hp.; and the Abarth modification, which also uses turbocharging, instantly reaches 160 hp. The power of the electric 500e is 111 hp. and 199.3 Nm of torque. All versions of the 500s can now be equipped with your choice of 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. However, we prefer the automatic transmission, through the available additional speed and the corresponding gear shift. Although these benefits contribute to more than 10% reduction in fuel economy. In turn, the 500e is equipped with a single-speed automatic transmission.

The whole essence of the FIAT 500 is reflected in the title: the car as a whole is not bad, however, it does not pull on the “excellent pupil” in general or in a single discipline, too many blots. At the same time, all these remarks are not critical, you can put up with them, there is no clear and concrete “failure” here.
