Now official: Chevrolet will launch a pickup truck that will challenge the Fiat Toro

28 May

The new Chevy truck is only addressed to South America so far. According to preliminary data, the model will celebrate its premiere next year.

Now it has been officially announced: there will be a truck, its production will be set up in Brazil. GM also noted that the pickup is part of the company’s current investment cycle in South America. Recall that in 2019, the concern allocated 10 billion reais for the development of Chevy and its Brazilian factories, and part of the funds have already been spent – for example, on launching the local assembly of the latest generation Tracker crossover (the predecessor was supplied there from Mexico). Then the investments were frozen – a pandemic prevented. However, at the beginning of this year, the program was restarted. The upcoming pickup is said to be in development and “will present a completely innovative brand concept in the commercial vehicle segment.” In addition, GM South America has confirmed that the model will be “the next member of Chevrolet’s new global family,” which includes the latest Onix hatch and sedan and the latest Tracker. This means that the truck will share the GEM (Global Emerging Markets) platform with the listed models. There are no images of the novelty yet, the name has not been named either.

Some Brazilian media outlets believe that the pickup could be positioned as the successor to the Chevrolet Montana. The current Montana has been in service since 2010, this simple car is only two-door, while the new Chevy pickup will certainly get a full four-door cab. By the way, the Fiat Strada also acquired a similar modification with the change of generations. However, it seems more likely that Chevrolet will still promote its pickup as a completely new model, and its main competitor will be the Fiat Toro, which is larger and more expensive than the Strada.

Where the opinions of the Brazilians agreed is that the look of the new Chevrolet is not inspired by the related Tracker, but by another crossover of the brand: the pickup will supposedly have two-tier head optics, like the Trailblazer (it is in the title photo; this cross is built on a different platform , in Brazil it is not presented, unlike the frame SUV of the same name). The engine, however, will most likely be transferred from the Tracker. We are talking about “turboā€¯ 1.2, which “feeds” on both gasoline (132 hp) and ethanol (133 hp), while the output for a truck can increase. The local Chevrolet Tracker is still available with a liter three-cylinder turbo (116 hp, regardless of fuel), but it is not yet clear if such an engine will go to the truck. The SUV does not have all-wheel drive, so the pickup is likely to be exclusively front-wheel drive.

The new model is expected in the middle of next year, although GM has not announced the timing. The pickups will also be delivered to the rest of South America, there is no information about plans to sell the model in other regions.
