“Refreshed” coupe and convertible Mercedes E-Class: an updated line of engines and multimedia

The German company has declassified the restyled two-door cars of the family. In Europe, sales of new products will start in the fall, in the US – towards the end of the year.

Mercedes-Benz intended to show the updated E-Class sedan and station wagon in March 2020 at the Geneva Motor Show, but the exhibition was canceled due to the outbreak of coronavirus in Europe. As a result, four- and five-door cars were presented in the online premiere format. And today, also on the Web, the restyled coupes and cabriolet Mercedes-Benz E-Class debuted, in addition, the company showed new “two-doors” in versions of the Mercedes-AMG E53. During the update, the appearance of the E-Class coupe and cabriolet has changed a bit: for example, the two-door cars have received completely different LED head optics and a radiator grill expanding to the bottom. Visually, the tail lights remained the same, but they changed the “stuffing”. There are several new colors for painting the body. Standard coupes and convertibles are equipped with 18-inch wheels. In turn, the AMG E53 versions are based on 19-inch five-spoke wheels, and 20-inch rollers are optionally available. In addition, such “two-doors” can be distinguished by four round tailpipes of the exhaust system and a proprietary radiator grill with vertical slats. In the interior of the restyled “two-door” E-Class, a new three-spoke multifunction steering wheel and an updated MBUX infotainment system with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a pair of displays (one of them is a digital dashboard, the second is the central touch screen “ multimedia “). In the standard version, their size is 10.25 inches, optionally available 12.3-inch. In order to control the system, you can also use the function of voice commands Hey, Mercedes. There are new trim options. The coupe and convertible Mercedes-AMG E53 differ due to other seats, red seat belts and carbon fiber trim elements.

The basic equipment of the restyled “two-door” E-Class includes an automatic emergency braking system, an active parking assistant (includes a camera with a 360-degree view) and a function for monitoring blind spots. Other driver assistants are available at an additional cost.

Coupe and cabriolet Mercedes-Benz E-Class received a four-cylinder OM654M diesel engine with 265 hp, it works in tandem with a 48-volt starter-generator EQ Boost, which is integrated into the gearbox (nine-speed automatic). This appendage gives an additional 20 hp. and 180 Nm during acceleration. The same starter-generator is now equipped with an in-line six-cylinder gasoline engine M256 (the engine is available in the CLS, S-Class and GLE line). As part of this installation, he provides a premium of 22 hp. and 250 Nm. The total installation capacity of the E 450 4Matic version is 367 hp. (500 Nm).

In the engine lineup of the E-Class coupe and cabriolet, there is also a new OM656 six-cylinder diesel engine, its output is 340 hp, and the maximum torque is 700 Nm. Also on the list are: 194-horsepower diesel engine (400 Nm); a pair of petrol “turbo fours” with a 14 HP hybrid add-on and 150 Nm – the first power is 197 hp (320 Nm), the second – 258 hp (370 Nm). Later, the motor range can be replenished with other options.

The updated coupe and convertible Mercedes-AMG E53 also received a 22-horsepower hybrid appendage to the 3.0-liter in-line six-cylinder engine. The total return of the installation remained the same – 435 hp and 520 Nm of torque. The gearbox, like the standard E-Class, is a nine-speed automatic; drive – full 4Matic.

Updated dealerships and a convertible Mercedes-Benz E-Class will reach European dealers in the fall of 2020. Updating the family is designed to spur interest in cars. Recall that E-Class sales in the countries of the Old World have been declining for two consecutive years: in 2018 the family lost 7.6%, and in 2019 (107 453 units were sold) – almost 9%.
