This year marks the 20th anniversary of the International Engine of the Year award that chooses the best engines in the market. In order to participate, the engines must conform to one of the categories created by the organization and be on sale in more than one country. Each member of the jury has 25 points to reward their five favorite engines in each category. These are some of the winners in categories.
Best engine of the year
It has devastated. With nothing less than 486 points, the 3.9 V8 twin-turbo Ferrari (which ride the Ferrari 488 GTB, 488 Spider or the more radical 488 Track) has taken the most prized award ahead of the Porsche 3.0 turbocharged six-cylinder (premiered in the Porsche 911 2016), which has remained with 198 points. The 6.5 V12 of the Ferrari 812 Superfast was third, with 158 points.
Better engine of less than a liter
The 1.0 TSI of Volkswagen, which assembles many Group vehicles, such as the new Seat Ibiza or the Volkswagen Golf, has been taken to the water. We have stood out for its good performance and because it is able to keep consumption at bay in real driving conditions, something that not all the mechanics so small achieve. Its 283 points slightly exceed the usual winner of this category, the Ford Ecoboost 1.0, which remains on the verge of repeating the award with 267 points.
Best engine between 1.4 and 1.8 liters
BMW 1.5 associated with an electric motor and a plug-in hybrid scheme. We can find it in the BMW i8 and BMW i8 Roadster, which have been updated and deliver a whopping 374 HP thanks to the battery, which increases its capacity to 11.6 kWh to be able to run 54 km in electric mode.
Better engine between 3.0 and 4.0 liters (and better engine performance)
3.9 V8 bi-turbo Ferrari takes this award with 560 undeniable points. They are more than double the second classified, the 4.0 V8 bi-turbo Mercedes-AMG that equips, among others, the Mercedes-AMG GT that starred in one of our tests. Third, not far from this is the Porsche 4.0 atmospheric boxer, which we find in the 911 GT3 and 911 R.
Better engine of more 4.0 liters (and better new engine)
The winner of these two awards is the Ferrari 6.5 V12 atmospheric, one of the last of its lineage. It is mounted exclusively on the 812 Superfast. Its 800 CV deserved reward. It is imposed on the 5.2 V10 of Lamborghini (protagonist also in the Audi R8) and the 4.4 bi-turbo V8 of BMW M that carries the BMW M5.
Better electric motor and better ecological engine
Tesla wins for the second year in a row the prize for best moto-electric of the year. The full electric powertrain of Tesla (mounted on the Model S and Model X) gets 408 points. The Tesla engine is also (as all the last five years) the award of the best ecological engine of the year, ahead of the BMW hybrid of the BMW i8 and the electric BMW i3.
