The German brand revealed the appearance of a restyled version of its most popular crossover. According to preliminary data, a full-fledged presentation of the standard SUV will take place in the summer, later several more new modifications should enter the market.
The second-generation Volkswagen Tiguan crossover debuted in 2015, it began its market career in 2016, and a year later, the seven-seater Allspace (with a 110 mm wheelbase extended) joined the standard SUV. The model was successful. So, last year almost 911,000 units were produced, in addition, in 2019 Tiguan became the best-selling SUV in Europe: according to Jato Dynamics, it sold 224,890 copies, which is 1% more than a year earlier. And now it’s time for the planned restyling. Generally refreshed Tiguan more than once came across paparazzi, and sometimes without a shred of camouflage. But Volkswagen decided to “play the intrigue”: so far the only sketch of a restyled model has been published.
So, the cross received the headlights in the style of the last Golf (according to unofficial information, Tiguan’s head optics are already in the “base” with LED optics, and matrix headlights will be offered for an extra charge) and a new front bumper, the radiator grill is stretched into a “smile”. The feed most likely has changed slightly. The salon, too, was probably designed based on the “eighth” Golf, that is, the number of physical buttons inside can be reduced. It is expected that the restyled VW Tiguan will acquire “soft hybrid” versions with a 48-volt starter-generator (like the same Golf). And it is already known for certain that the global crossover will still have a full-fledged hybrid option with the possibility of recharging from the mains. The pre-reform Tiguan is also produced in the form of a rechargeable hybrid, but such a cross is sold only in China: it is equipped with a 1.4 TSI gasoline, an electric motor is built into the DSG robotic box, the battery capacity is 12.1 kW * h, the total output is 218 hp, the drive – just the front. The “world” Tiguan PHEV specifications may be different (for example, the total power of the new Golf GTE – 245 hp). Recall that the engine range of the current standard crossover includes gasoline 1.4 TSI, 1.5 TSI and 2.0 TSI, as well as a 2.0 TDI diesel. Meanwhile, after restyling, the VW Tiguan family, in addition to the hybrid, will be replenished with two more new modifications: the cross-coupe and the “charged” R-version will enter the market, they were already caught during the tests. It is assumed that the “hot” Tiguan R received a “turbo four” 2.0 with a capacity of 333 hp. – like the upcoming Golf R.
The premiere of the standard updated crossover is scheduled for the summer, the exact date has not yet been announced. By the way, it became known earlier that Volkswagen will soon begin to resume production, which was stopped due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
