Toyota is preparing to debut a crossover, which will rivals Volkswagen ID.4 and Nissan Ariya

So far, the Japanese company is ready to show only the harbinger of the future “green” novelty, the serial version of the SUV is expected later.

Toyota and Subaru have been cooperating since 2005: then Toyota acquired 9.5% of Fuji Heavy Industries (the former name of Subaru). Subsequently, this stake was gradually increased, now Toyota’s share is 20% (it owns a fifth of Subaru). Japanese companies have jointly developed a new e-TNGA platform: as we reported earlier, this “trolley” will form the basis of six new products, one of which will be the Toyota crossover (it was previously announced for the European market).

Toyota intends to unveil the concept of its new SUV at the upcoming Shanghai Auto Show (the exhibition kicks off early next week). The company still does not tell the name of the future novelty, but it is known that the entire line of electric cars was given the name Beyond Zero (translated from English – “beyond zero”) or BZ. Toyota shows a teaser for the X prologue concept, which is the announcement for a new family

So far, the company has not shown what the “electro crossover” will look like, but only teased with a teaser, which does not fully show the front of the concept. By the way, the LED head optics of the future novelty does not look “futuristic”, so we can assume that this option will remain with the production version. The car will be roughly the size of the RAV4, and its competitors in the European market are Nissan Ariya and Volkswagen ID.4.

Judging by the teaser, the show car has a plug in place of the radiator grill, traditional for electric vehicles; a large air intake is built into the front bumper. The logo on the hood is highlighted in blue. Side mirrors are conventional (not miniature cameras that are often installed on concepts). There is no information about the interior of the future SUV yet.

As we have already noted, the “battery” crossover is based on the e-TNGA platform. This architecture is very flexible: it can be used to create cars with front, rear and all-wheel drive; with various options for electric motors and traction batteries (their capacity varies from 50 to 100 kWh). Most likely, the simpler versions will have only one electric motor, and the top-end versions will be offered with twin-engine power plants. The four-cylinder Toyota Supra is coming to Europe

According to preliminary data, the base version will have a 163-horsepower electric motor on the front axle. The power of the other variant will be 204 hp. In the richest version, a twin-engine unit is expected, the total output of which will be 217 hp. The estimated maximum cruising range is 500 km.

Recall that the Toyota model will have a “twin brother” from Subaru, the company has not yet disclosed his name. It is possible that Subaru will call its model Evoltis. Meanwhile, in the current range of the Japanese brand there is already a SUV with the following name: Evoltis has renamed the large Ascent crossover, intended for the South American market. It is possible that Subaru will use this name for both models.
