When you are choosing a vehicle at an auction, most of your attention usually goes to the body, mileage, and visible damage. But there is another detail that can provide useful clues before a full inspection: the wheels and tires.
Their condition can help you spot potential issues and estimate possible expenses after purchase.
Uneven Tire Wear Is an Important Clue
Don’t look only at how much tread is left. Pay attention to how evenly it has worn.
If the inner or outer part of a tire is significantly more worn, it may be related to incorrect tire pressure, wheel alignment, or suspension issues. NHTSA also recommends paying attention to uneven wear as a possible reason to check wheel alignment.

Different Tires Can Tell a Story
If a vehicle has different tire brands or models, it isn’t necessarily a problem. Some tires may simply have been replaced at different times.
However, if one tire looks noticeably different in condition or wear, it’s worth finding out why. It can also matter financially: you may need to replace one tire or even the entire set after purchase.
Check the Age of the Tires
You can often find a DOT identification number on the tire sidewall. The last four digits indicate the week and year of manufacture. For example, 0324 means the third week of 2024.
Tire age alone doesn’t determine their condition, but it can tell you how long ago they were manufactured. Also check the sidewalls for cracks, cuts, bulges, or other visible damage.
Don’t Ignore the Wheels
Deep scratches, dents, or other wheel damage may be the result of contact with a curb, pothole, or another obstacle.
Pay particular attention if the damaged wheel is close to the vehicle’s main damage area. A strong impact can affect more than just the tire or wheel and may also involve suspension components or wheel alignment.
One Wheel May Look Different From the Other Three
This is a simple but useful check.
Compare all four wheels in the available photos:
- Are the wheels the same?
- Do the tires appear to be in similar condition?
- Is the tread wear comparable?
- Is one wheel noticeably more damaged?
One different wheel does not prove that the vehicle has a serious problem. But it is a good reason to look closer.
Check the Tire Size
The markings on the tire sidewall also provide information about its size. The tire size should match the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations or an approved configuration for that model.
This is especially important if the vehicle has aftermarket wheels or suspension modifications.
